Fez Medina Guided Tour: A Full Day in Fes el-Bali
from$35per person

Overview

Fez is not a city you tick off a list. It is a city you walk into, and then let close behind you. This full-day guided tour leads you through Fes el-Bali, the medieval core of Fez and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, where thousands of lanes fold into one another and no car can follow. Your guide grew up inside these walls, and it shows: workshop doors open, shopkeepers look up and wave, and the stories behind the carved cedar and cut tile arrive the way they are told at home rather than the way they are printed on a plaque.

A city founded in the eighth century

Fez grew up on the banks of the Oued Fes under the Idrisid dynasty and became the intellectual capital of the western Islamic world. You will stand before Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri and recognised as the oldest continuously operating degree-granting university on earth, and step inside the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Marinid masterpiece whose cedar screens, marble courtyard and zellige walls still stop people mid-sentence.

The medina, quarter by quarter

From the Blue Gate at Bab Boujloud the day unfolds slowly: the spice and perfume stalls of Souk Attarine, the Nejjarine fountain and its museum of wooden arts, the hammering rhythm of the coppersmiths on Place Seffarine, the dyers lane hung with wet wool, and the Chouara tannery seen from a terrace above its honeycomb of stone vats. We finish on high ground near the Marinid tombs or Borj Nord, where the whole medina lies below you as one unbroken field of rooftops and minarets.

Who this day is for

First-time visitors who want the full picture rather than a fragment, returning travelers who never found the back lanes, families, photographers, and anyone who would rather understand a place than simply photograph it. The pace is walking pace, with shade, tea and rest built into the route.

Good to know before you come

Wear shoes you can walk several kilometres in on uneven stone, bring water and a hat in summer, and keep shoulders and knees covered for religious buildings. Non-Muslim visitors cannot enter the prayer halls of working mosques, including the Qarawiyyin, but the courtyards, medersas, museums and workshops on this route are open to everyone. Tell us if your group includes children, limited mobility or a short time window and we will reshape the route around you.
